SCOOP: Did Aamir Khan want Vikram Vedha to be set in China? Opted out due to Covid-19 led negativity?

Over the last few days, it has been confirmed that Hrithik Roshan will play the role of Vedha in the official remake of Vikram Vedha with Saif Ali Khan stepping in to be the cop, Vikram in the film. It will be directed by Pushkar – Gayatri, who directed the Tamil original too. However, a year and a half back, Aamir Khan was supposed to do the role of gangster in this film. He took a back seat from the remake around the month of November, which was followed by media articles that the actor had walked out since he was not satisfied with the script. Bollywood Hungama did some investigation and came out with exclusive reason why the superstar walked out of Vikram Vedha.

SCOOP Did Aamir Khan want Vikram Vedha to be set in China Opted out due to Covid-19 led negativity

A source associated with the film shared on anonymous condition, “Aamir Khan loved the original version of Vikram Vedha and had conveyed to Neeraj Pandey, Reliance and the director duo, his vision for the gangster drama. Aamir wanted to spin it around as a quintessential Hong-Kong based Gangster drama, with sleek action, set against the backdrop of gang-wars in Hong-Kong, making the story more friendly for Chinese market, to get additional gains from the market. The storytelling template would have been a first for Indian audience too.”

The creative team had started working on the script and multiple narration meetings happened with Aamir, who was happy with the way the script had shaped. His idea was to make it one of the first Indian films that actually appeals to the neighbouring Asian country, with actors from all across. He saw that potential in Vikram Vedha, and wanted to take things to the next level. “But when Covid-19 outbreak happened, followed by the tussle in Ladakh, the relationship between India and China went from bad to worse and Aamir had no option but to back out of the film.”

After he backed off, the team got back to Hrithik Roshan, who was their first choice even before Aamir, but had initially rejected the film because of date issues, but the pandemic cleared his shoot calendar and gave him the time space to come on board Vikram Vedha. “He always liked the script and was inclined towards playing the negative lead. So that’s how, it all happened.” the source shared.

Ajay Devgn-starrer MayDay inspired from the 2015 Doha-Kochi flight incident

Ajay Devgn is on a roll nowadays. As an actor, he’s at the best phase of his career. His last film, Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior was 2020’s biggest grosser, earning Rs. 279.55 crore. As a producer, his company, Ajay Devgn Ffilms, is doing great. And now as a director, he has begun work on his fourth directorial, MayDay. The superstar also acts in this film besides Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh. It is scheduled for release on April 29, 2022 and is already one of the most awaited films of Bollywood.

Ajay Devgn-starrer MayDay inspired from the 2015 Doha-Kochi flight incident

The title of the film had already made it evident that the film is something to do with an aircraft in need of help. But not much was given out by the film’s team about its premise. However, now it has come to light that MayDay is inspired by an astonishing but little known true incident. As per a recent report, the film is inspired by the 2015 episode of a Jet Airways Doha-Kochi flight that had a close shave due to poor visibility.

The said incident took place on Tuesday August 18, 2015 early in the morning. The flight 9W 555 had 141 passengers and eight crew members on board. Trouble arose when the flight, which took off from Doha, tried to land at its destination at Kochi but was unable to do so due to poor visibility. The plane was then diverted to Trivandrum where the visibility was equally poor, prompting the pilots to initiate a May Day call. After three failed attempts, the plane landed at Trivandrum airport with only 250 kg of fuel left, although some reports say it had around 350 kg of fuel left. However, the minimum a Boeing 737 aircraft should have as fuel reserve is about 1500 kg.

A trade expert says, “The incident made news at that point but was soon forgotten. Hence, audiences would be in for a surprise when they’ll see MayDay and realize that it’s inspired from a shocking, true incident. Also, the papers only reported about the incident but didn’t follow up with the case. So one hardly knows what happened later on. It’s an exciting idea that Ajay Devgn has chosen for his directorial venture.”

MayDay went on floors in December 2020 and most of the shoot is already over. Last week, the second last schedule was wrapped up in Mira Road and Vasai and now the final schedule will take place in Doha. This three-day shoot was scheduled to happen in April-end but due to the surge in Coronavirus cases, Ajay Devgn has decided to put this schedule on hold.

Ranveer Singh – Shankar – Jayantilal Gada come together to remake South blockbuster Anniyan; to go on floors in Mid 2022

This is most certainly one of the biggest director-actor collaborations in recent times! Iconic director Shankar, known for his path-breaking, larger-than-life vision, and Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh, who has given India some of the most unforgettable and lovable characters on-screen, are coming together in an unprecedented creative coup! Shankar will be directing Ranveer in the official adaptation of his cult blockbuster Anniyan, that will be mounted on a gigantic cinematic canvas, promising one of the most anticipated pan-Indian cinematic events of our time.

The yet-untitled project is being interestingly announced around the auspicious time of Baisakhi in North India and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, which marks the New Year celebrations in these respective calendars. This signifies the intent that Shankar and Ranveer have to make this project a pan-Indian entertainer. The film is slated to go on the floors in Mid-2022. It will be co-produced by God Bless Entertainment and the music of the film will be available on Saregama.

Expressing his excitement, director Shankar said, “For it to be made into a Hindi film, Anniyan needed a maverick, charismatic showman like no other to play the part. I found this in the mercurial Ranveer Singh because he is a one-in-a-generation actor who has shown us that he can immortalise a character through his stellar performance. I’m thrilled to make Anniyan for the pan-Indian audience and I’m confident that this powerful story will strike a chord in the hearts of all. In Dr. Gada, Ranveer and I have found an ideal producer who believes in the vision we have to change the nativity of content for audiences across the country.“

Superstar Ranveer Singh says, “I am blessed to have this opportunity to be a part of the spectacular cinematic vision of Shankar sir. He is an exception to the norm, a true disruptor who has shown us that no vision is large enough to achieve on screen. I had always hoped and dreamed that I would get a chance to collaborate with him, and I have a strong feeling that we will create magic together. To lead a film like Anniyan is a dream come true for any artiste. Vikram Sir, one of our country’s finest talents, an artiste who I hugely admire, gave a colossal performance in the original, one that can never be matched. I can only hope that my interpretation and rendition of the part also connects with audiences in the same way. It’s undoubtedly a once-in-a-lifetime performance piece, and I am ready to give this role every single ounce of my being. Shankar Sir is a genius filmmaker and a true visionary. Words don’t do justice to just how excited I am at the prospect of being directed by him”

Talking about the Shankar-Ranveer creative coup, Dr. Jayantilal Gada, Chairman and M.D. of Pen Studios says, “Shankar and Ranveer are two forces of nature and them coming together is the biggest cinematic event in India. For us at Pen, it is an opportunity of a lifetime and we are thrilled to partner with the two powerhouses as producers and worldwide distributors of the film. We are confident that their collaboration will write a new chapter in the history of Indian cinema. We are announcing the film during a very significant time of Baisakhi and Puthandu to signify Shankar and Ranveer’s intent to make a truly pan-Indian entertainer!”
